WHAT’S HAPPENING

  • Home is where the art is — or in this case, the design. London-based Facit Homes claims to be the first company in the world to digitally fabricate a bespoke home on-site, starting with its design (GizMag.com, 24 Aug 2012).
  • A 3D computer model contains every detail of the house-to-be’s components: from its materials and measurements to the position and number of individual plug sockets.
  • The company delivers a compact mobile production facility to the building site. The house components are measured and made-to-order by a computer-controlled cutter on-site.
  • A couple from Hertfordshire were the first to have their house built using the digital build process, and their home was also designed with energy conservation in mind. The entire 200 sq m property requires a heating system with an output of just 4 kW, equivalent to a single radiator.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

  • Eco-living starts from the ground up. It’s not just the right materials that help make a sustainable home. Efficient design and production management allow keen green consumers to minimise waste and maximise energy efficiency from start to finish.
  • It’s convenient too — producing components on-site means there’s no wait time for materials, and there’s always the possibility of adding something new.
